To Bisque or not to Bisque......
Переглядів 4822 місяці тому
This video is in response to viewers who ask about glazing greenware or unfired clay. I decided to do both a firing of greenware and bisque using cone 06 glaze on both pieces and firing in not only in a regular kiln, but also my microwave kiln. I hope you find the results interesting and informative. Thanks for watching. As usual, if you have question, please ask!

Why do some people vacuum out the bubbles of the investment an you don't? I been doing this silica flour, dental plaster, water investment for a couple years off and on now with limited success. My issue is the molds will often crack. I wonder if I vacuum out the air in the investment as it's setting if it will increase the durability of my molds. I use homemade leaded glass and ideally need something capable of withstanding 2200f.

I’m new to ceramics, but I have my background in stained glass and Glass fusion. I’m searching UA-cam right now to see if you can just put glass frit in a glaze because I suspect that’s how these crystal glazes are made. I’m searching for something in pink that’s equivalent to makos blue splatter wear. I can’t find it, so the glass frit idea popped in my head. I would like to try it and clear and in a white base. Thank you for your experiment! I LOVE your results!

Yes, always use kiln wash on a mold that will be used to slump or mold glass. Failure to do so will make the glass stick to the mold.

Hi. I made a comment on your other microwave mold video. I noticed this effect on round glass pendants I was making. I would melt bottle glass in a kiln paper lined terra cotta saucer, but refiring with frit sprinkled on top often led to the same busting apart effect. I found going SUUUUUPER slow, 30 secs, wait for heat to distribute, 30 secs, and repeat for 10 times. then jump to 1 minute, again fire wait, fire wait, 10 times. 2 minutes, 3.... Well this takes a loooong time. I have yet to do so, but have seen someone say they put their pieces in the oven before firing in the microwave and they never have a problem. I see this as a challenge I want to solve. I am going to be testing a few things for molds themselves like I said previously. I have sludge from my rock tumbler (it is mostly used with glass) that made a nice little refractory tester piece. I am going to mix graphite powder that I just bought with low fire clay, and also do a crushed perlite/clay mix. I did try mixing some slaked lime made from eggshells into clay for a test disc. Was nice for refractory, but was too brittle. May also test plaster and silica recipe I have seen for standard glass molds once my order of plaster comes in. I also will use the graphite as a wash just to see if it prevents glass from sticking. To make the molds I will be making them out of Monster Clay (plasticine or similar would be fine too) and then casting it in plaster. I will use slips to make thin walled molds. I also saw in a video that the molds a user had were hollow, with a small opening on the side for ventilation. I will be attempting to replicate this.

You have some great projects planed and I would like to know how they turn out. I do love to experiment with different things, especially those materials the "experts" say woill not work....you never know! With glass, just make sure you do not mix different types (COE) as that will cause cracks and stuff for sure.

Save you throwing plaster out. Use a plastic flexi vessel then just let it set in the tub. All you do is flex the tub and brake the excess plaster up. Then when you make a new mix. Half fill the mould and dump all the dry bits of plaster in the wet mix. And this will bulk your mould up. Then fill it with the rest of the wet mix.

If the crack is in the top part and nothing has fallen off it will probably be OK. You might want to try using a little water glass/sodium silicate in the crack. It is in a liquid form and will seep into the crack and when dried and fired it will solidify. Thats just a suggestion. I have not tried it in a crack.
